Sick Baby Update Part 1

Good morning!

I just wanted to get a quick update up for all of those who are asking!

Please read my previous post “Sick Baby” if you haven’t already to understand what is going on.

Oaklee went in on Monday morning for her follow up appointment. She seems to be back to normal to me and the doctor was pleased with how much she is moving and how much her attitude has changed! She requested more blood work to be done to make sure her inflammation levels were going down and to continue taking Naproxen for another four weeks and see her again.

She called back later that day to give us the blood results and said that the inflammation levels were going down but now it showed her liver enzymes were high… Her doctor said it could be a few things like the medication she was taking or it could be another clue to whatever she has (the doctors still don’t know). She asked us to stop the medication and come in the following day (Tuesday) and get an ultrasound of her liver to make sure everything was okay and to follow up with more blood work on Thursday.

We received the ultrasound results and everything is normal. So right now we are waiting until Thursday to see if her levels have changed since stopping the medication. I will be sure to do another update once we know more. She seems to be moving normal (I was a little nervous she would slow down after we stopped the medicine but she seems to be doing fine). It's been very stressful for us and we are so ready for it to be over! We were getting close to paying off our medical bills from Zack's surgeries from 3 years ago, Oaklee's birth and now this. It kind of seems endless but I know it will all work out. We appreciate you all taking the time to reach out and give us encouraging words. It truly means so much to me and thank you for your continued prayers. Hoping and praying for good news Thursday.

Oaklee 8 months!

Okay so I totally forgot to write Oaklee’s 8 month update. Oops!

Loves:

·            Still obsessing over dogs! Whenever she sees one she immediately says “Dog!” And also starts to sign dog.
·            She started to eat the little puff treats and loves them! Such a good treat to keep her quiet while out at dinner!
·            Still adores her daddy! He is the only one that can get her to belt out her little laugh!

Dislikes:
·            She still dislikes when you aren’t giving her your full attention.
·            Dislikes waiting for her food to be ready

Growth:

·            Currently in size 12 month
·            Wears size 3 diapers

Eating:
·            Still going strong on pumping! She gets 4-5 bottles a day!
·            Loves eating food! I am getting pretty board with the baby food selection though.
·            She loves when Grandpa Mike & Daddy sneak her treats. (Donuts, cookies, French fries & pretzels) It drives mama crazy!
·            Loves her puff & cracker treats!

Sleeping:
·            Sleeping habits are still the same. Two naps a day and sleeps through the night. Truly blessed with that.

Development:
·            Rolls around instead of crawling
·            Can turn in circles on her tummy (so close to crawling!)
·            Can turn around in circles while sitting up
·            Can go from sitting up down to the crawling position and will start to roll
·            Can say Dog, Dad, Daddy & sometimes (almost never) mama!

Health:
·            Her two bottom teeth have grown in and it’s so adorable!
·            Eczema has been a little rough with the colder months approaching. Trying to stay on top of the lotion but she doesn’t seem to mind it much.

Parenting:
I can’t believe how fast this year is going! Oaklee’s cousin Declan just turned one and it made me realize how fast her birthday is approaching! It’s so amazing and bittersweet to watch your child grow and develop. She is so smart and is always amazing me.

Looking forward to:
·            Crawling
·            Walking
·            More words
·            Learning more sign language

Oaklee's Birth Story (Part Two)

Bear with me, this post is going to be a looooong one.

It was such an amazing feeling to finally be able to hold my baby girl in my arms. She was finally here and I could not believe it!

After the doctors held her up and we were able to hear her weight and height they began to take the placenta out. This feeling I will never forget!

It started to feel like my doctor was putting his hand all the way up to my lungs! I remember looking over at Zack and the anesthesiologist and saying, “I can’t breathe, I can’t breathe!”

The anesthesiologist was amazing and kept telling me that everything was okay, that I was doing great! But I kept insisting that I couldn’t breathe (I literally thought I was going to die).  But after what felt like 3 minutes (was actually 30 seconds) the doctor was done and they began to stitch/staple me back up (stitched on the inside, stapled on the outside).

After the C-section was over they wheeled me into a recovery room where I could not wait to hold my little girl! It was close to midnight at this time and my mom & sister were still at the hospital waiting to see baby! The nurses were kind enough to let them sneak a peak in the recovery room so they could take off for the night.

In the recovery room they let me know I had a pretty bad fever (from an infection). I was FREEZING and shaking (from being cold and the epidural) and asked for a blanket but they wouldn’t give me one because of how bad my fever was (I think it was a lot worse than they were telling me). I just kept asking for a little blanket even just a little corner on my feet and they kept saying no. L haha
After a few minutes they finally wheeled my little girl in and I was able to hold her! That was one of the most amazing moments in my life! You go all those months dreaming about what your baby is going to look like and here she is, in your arms and you can’t put into words the feelings that rush through you.

I instantly told Zack she looked like him. And I put my finger in her hand and she grabbed on to it. I’d been dreaming of that moment for months as well.

I held her for a little while and then it was Zack's turn. I could tell he was nervous and a little grossed out (she still had blood on her). Haha It was such a special moment to watch your husband become a daddy and together, in a matter of minutes you become a family of three. I pray those memories never fade.

They finally wheeled me back to my room after my fever started to go down. I remember begin in no pain at all just really thirsty, and again they wouldn’t let me have anything (wanted to make sure I didn’t throw up). And after a VERY long day Zack and I went to sleep.

10-15 minutes later they came in and woke me up to feed O and give me some ice chips to suck on. Ice chips that tasted like they were sent straight from heaven I was so thirsty. Haha
Oaklee was a natural at breastfeeding and latched right on and ate her little heart out. I was so relieved that it was so simple. I was a bit nervous for that part.

That night we all slept great.

The next day our families came out to visit and see Oaklee. She also got her first bath and we were able to dress her up in a cute little outfit.

The next morning the doctor came in and said the morning checkup on Oaklee didn’t go to well. They noticed her breathing had become rapid and he ordered an x-ray and would be back to give us an update but that for now she would need to stay in the nursery. Zack didn’t think too much of it and thought that everything would be fine. After all, she was doing so great the day before.

A little while later the doctor came back to let us know that they found a small hole in Oaklee’s lung and that it had begun to collapse (technical word for this is pneumothorax)… They also noticed that her blood cells were showing that she was getting an infection. And to top it off they thought the infection was from inhaling meconium. Zack and I were left really confused and not sure how to feel…

Later that afternoon we were allowed to go in the nursery to see her. That was really hard for me… To see our little girl hooked up to so many machines and having to have an IV. I cried and Zack kept telling me it was okay, and to stop crying (he isn’t very good with people crying).

We were told that Oaklee would need to stay in the hospital for another few days to make sure her lung was healing and that they could finish the full round of antibiotics. Honestly I remember feeling devastated that something was wrong with my baby. I hate when things don’t go as planned and it was hard to take in that we wouldn’t be able to take our baby home when we thought we would.
Luckily the hospital was AMAZING and gave us a room on “hotel stay”, which meant that they would give us a room to stay in, for free! That took such a huge weight off my shoulders knowing that I would be close to Oaklee through it all.

A few days had passed and the doctor came in daily to give us an update and everyday it seemed like nothing was improving. He said the hole was healing, but slower than they thought and the infection was staying the same. They had tried to take her off Oxygen to see how she would do and she kept failing the tests, so the nursery she stayed.  He let us know that she would need a few more days.
Since we stayed at the hospital they called me every time she was hungry to come down to the nursery and feed her. (She was still able to breastfeed, thank goodness. Having that time with her made everything feel a little better). That ringtone on that phone in the hospital will forever haunt me. Haha Sometimes I hear people have it as a ringtone on their cell and it instantly gives me chills.

As far as recovery went for me, I was starting to feel the pain of everything hit me at once. It was really hard to get out of bed and walk down to the nursery several times a day but they let me know walking was the best thing I could do. Getting out of bed and standing up felt like an elephant was sitting on my chest and I could not breathe! I was gasping for air every time. Zack would look at me like I was crazy! It would take me a minute or two to finally catch my breath. The worst part of it all was I felt like I had to poop sooooooo bad (like you have no idea how bad) and I just couldn’t. It was the worst feeling in the world. Haha (tmi?) I believe three days after my C-section they came in to take out my staples. It felt like a little bee sting, not bad at all until they noticed that my skin had grown over one of the staples. I can’t even begin to explain how painful getting that out was. That and the poop pain were worse than labor. Not even kidding.

Back to Oaklee. The antibiotics were finally finished (at this point we had been in the hospital for a week and one day) and the last update we heard was that she would most likely be able to go home once they were complete. At this point Zack had been going to work during the days but spending the night with me and making sure I had food. Zack is a pretty closed person and doesn’t do well in situations like this (I don’t think anyone in his family took what was going on very well. We all wanted answers and weren’t really getting them) so work became his safe place.

The day had finally come and we were ready to see how she did off Oxygen so that we could finally go home and begin our life! The doc came in and said she had failed the oxygen test again and that he wanted to keep an eye on her a little longer… We weren’t going home.

I was crushed. I had spent what felt like an eternity in the hospital and wanted to go home! The next few days were hell. I started to come down with a cold (I believe from literally doing nothing but sitting in a bed all day) and everyday Oaklee kept failing every oxygen test they gave her. Now it was coming up on two weeks and they let us know that more than likely they would be sending O home on oxygen because that was the only thing holding her back. This wasn’t ideal but we were happy to be able to take our baby home. The only thing was Oaklee needed to pass the car seat test.

She needed to be able to spend 30 minutes in her car seat without her oxygen dropping and we would be able to go home! I was honestly so nervous for this because she had failed all the other tests and when I was in the nursery feeding another family’s baby had just failed the test and they were upset that they wouldn’t be going home. I didn’t want to feel that disappointment anymore.

They planned on doing the car seat test that afternoon during her nap. 30 minutes had passed and the phone rang… Oaklee passed the test! I was so grateful that we were going home!! The home and hospice came to show us how to use the oxygen at home and in the car. We packed up our stuff and buckled up our little girl and were on our way! I remember stepping outside for the first time in 2 weeks and noticed the trees had blossomed.

It was the greatest feeling in the world to drive off with your baby. We were finally able to take our baby home and start our life together. The first few days were stressful with the oxygen and I have to admit that I checked to see if she was breathing a million times a day but I was grateful to hold and snuggle her at home.

Oaklee spent another 2 weeks on oxygen and then was cleared to finally come off (the day she came off of oxygen I checked to see if she was breathing 2 million times). Haha Oaklee is doing amazing now! She is such a happy baby and enjoys smiling at everyone! She is so smart and independent! She is such a blessing and I am so thankful she is okay. She’s a strong little girl.

I on the other hand didn’t heal how I wanted to. I have diastasis recti and melisma on my stomach (I will do another post on how I am overcoming this). But it doesn’t matter much to me because I got my little Oakers (her nickname) out of it. She is the light of my world and I could not imagine life without her beaming smile. Zack and I love her to pieces!

I wanted to say Thank you to everyone who helped us during this time. Family, friends and hospital staff. You made it so much better and the kind and encouraging words and visits really meant the world to us. So thank you again!

Until next time.

Oaklee's Birth Story (Part 1)

I finally have a minute to sit down and get this all out! I can't believe I am a mommy! It's been crazy so far but I wouldn't trade it for the world! This post is going to be long so I am just going to jump right into it! (Please note this post has graphic pictures at the end, if you have a weak stomach I suggest you don’t look at them.)

Since my cervix was not doing anything (literally it did nothing) my doctor decided he would go ahead and get me scheduled for an induction. I was scheduled to go in March 29th and if anything happened sooner than we would go from there. As you can all guess nothing happened so at 41 weeks and two days we went in to start the induction process.

They started out by getting me set up on all the monitors and giving me an IV. At about 9:00 pm they started Cervidil. Nothing was happening so at about 1:00 am they did another round of Cervidil and that is when things started going. I started to get contractions in my back (we found out Oaklee was Posterior so I was lucky enough to experience back labor). It started out feeling like pressure in my lower back and it wasn't bad at all. At about 3:00 am is when it started getting pretty painful, at that time they gave me some form of magical medicine that literally made me feel higher than a kite and was amazing, the down side was that it wore off really fast so I got maybe an hour of relief and then the pain was back. When the pain came back it came back full force, the Cervidil was making it so I had no time in between contractions. It was literally one after another. I thought that things were moving along because of how strong the contractions were getting and how I was getting no time in between but when they checked me again I was still nothing. The nurse made me feel better and said I was half a centimeter. Haha.

I stuck it out until 7:00 am when it was shift change and the next nurse came in. (By the way my nurses were AMAZING! I could not have done it without them!) When she checked me I was about 3 centimeters. At that time my doctor came in and broke my water. He told me that it had a little meconium in it, but that it was nothing to worry about. (In my head I remember hearing that it causes infections, but if my doctor said it was okay then I would go with that.)

It wasn't painful but oh my, it was weird! You literally feel like you pee yourself and after he broke it I actually had to go pee so the nurse and Zack helped me get up to the bathroom (Zack had to hold a towel under my butt so it wouldn't get all over the floor, which it did anyway. I felt really embarrassed haha.)

After my doctor broke my water I decided to get my epidural. This was the part of labor I was terrified for. I HATE needles and knowing that a huge one was about to go in my back I was having a panic attack. I was squeezing Zack's hand so hard and he kept telling me how huge my eyes were! The anesthesiologist was the most kind hearted person and made me feel so comfortable. (He made the biggest impact on my labor but I'll get into that later on.) The epidural was not bad at all! The only part was when it felt like an electric shock go down my legs, it didn't hurt but scared me for a second. The epidural was amazing and made my bottom half feel like it weighed 1,000 lbs. I had to have help whenever I wanted to move from side to side.

After the epidural I slept for a few hours until my Mom and sister arrived. We talked for a while and I just kept drifting in and out of sleep for the next several hours. I am so glad my hospital let me have Jell-O, drinks and slushes. It made such a difference in how I felt.

The next time they checked me I was only at a four. In my head I already knew I would need a C-section based on my family's history and how my body is. In my family we have BIG babies. My mom’s first was 9lbs, both my sisters had 8-9lb babies so I knew that she would be on the bigger side. At each doctor’s appointment my doctor would just laugh every time he measured me because of how big I was but he still wanted me to try for a vaginal delivery.

At around 5:00 pm I started to feel a lot of pressure. It felt like I needed to poop really bad so I told the nurse and she got excited and checked me again to only find out I was still at a four. I felt this feeling for the rest of my labor, I knew I actually had to poop but no one believed me and kept saying, “Oh it’s just pressure from the baby.”

And I was like, “No, you don’t understand I have to poop!” haha

To get through the pain I used this method off a show we watched a few nights before. (I feel like I was meant to watch it because we never watch that show and it made a huge difference). In the show the guy was kidnapped and was being tortured for information. He used this method where he would take his mind to another place and not be mentally present in the room. He would take his mind to some of his favorite places and visualized about his wife and family. I for some reason during labor thought I would try it and when I would have a contraction I would imagine being at our cabin, going camping, holding our baby girl and it helped me get through each contraction.

My Mom and sister were also so amazing through the entire thing. I think Zack was really nervous and didn’t really know what or how to help me so he was happy when they showed up. My mom and sister brushed my hair (literally felt so amazing and made me relax) and would do anything I asked of them.

At about 8:00 pm I was so exhausted and only dilated to a 5 and wanted it to be over. I told the nurse that my body was telling me that it was done. She went and talked to my doctor and he wanted to wait one more hour and see if anything changed. I had been in labor for 23 hours and only dilated to a 5.

At 9:00 pm my doctor came in and checked me one last time and nothing had changed. I was also getting a fever and baby wasn’t responding the best to it. He decided it was time for a C-section. We signed the paper work, Zack got changed and the room filled with new nurses and people to take me to the operating room. I was so ready to finally meet our baby girl!

They took me down to the operating room and Zack was able to be by my side the entire time, which I was so grateful for. The got everything set up and started pinching my stomach and asking if I felt anything. I was scared to say no because then I knew they would start cutting me open and I was afraid that magically I’d be able to feel again right when they started cutting. Haha.

They opened me up and started going. A little bit through I got really nauseas and the anesthesiologist gave the little bag to Zack. I laughed inside a little because Zack was not the person to hold that thing! He HATES throw up. When I had morning sickness he would go to the other side of the house when I was throwing up just so he didn’t have to hear me! Haha.

Immediately after I started feeling sick I said, “I am gonna throw up, I am gonna throw up!”
I turned towards Zack because I knew he had the bag but he was a little too slow getting it to me and I pucked all over his hand! He instantly got up and ran to the hall because he was going to throw up too! He came back in after calming down.

Within what felt like three minutes of opening me up we heard our baby girl cry! I will never forget that sound! I looked over at Zack and we both had tears in our eyes.
Our baby girl was finally here!

One of the nurses was so kind to take Zack’s phone and take pictures of the process. At the time I had no idea about it and only just a few weeks ago did I finally see the pictures. It’s kind of amazing. I apologize if you have a weak stomach.

Stay tuned for Part 2. It will explain what a lot of people want to know.
Why our baby girl came home with oxygen.

O amazes her Daddy and I every day. She is so smart and has the sweetest personality! She loves to smile and talk! She’s starting to laugh more and it melts my heart to a trillion pieces! She is such a happy baby and it makes our job so easy!
She is starting to realize that being held is the best thing ever and will let you know she does not like when you put her down! Sometimes at work she will whine and cry and then as soon as I bend down to pick her up she gushes a HUGE smile (little butt).
The best part of my day is the mornings with her. As soon as we pop our faces over her crib she gets the biggest smile! It’s the best feeling to know this little human has so much love for you!
I am loving this parenting thing! (O does make is so easy for us) She teaches me so much and it’s really helping me grow as a person. I am still working on getting a schedule down. I still feel like some days just don’t have enough time and I can NEVER accomplish everything on my to do list. Sadly it’s the gym that gets pushed out most of the time, I really want to work on that. L But all and all Oaklee makes my heart so full and my days would not be the same without her!
Parenting goal for next month: Go an entire week being able to accomplish everything on my daily to do list. Let’s see how this goes! (:

15 Weeks!

How far along: 15 weeks as of September 27, 2015!

Maternity clothes: My clothes are starting to feel really tight!

Sleep: Sleeping okay, I just can never seem to get comfortable.

Best moment this week: Having our gender reveal appointment, even though this little angel was being a bit shy and didn't want anyone to see what he/she was! Mommy & Daddy had to go back a second time to get a better look.

Food cravings: Pickles & those peppers that Olive Garden put on the salads!

Food aversions: This doesn't really count as food but toothpaste really gets to me.

Gender: A girl!

Labor signs: Nope!

Pregnancy symptoms: Not feeling the best at nights this week.
My gums are very sensitive and bleed really easily.
I can feel baby move now!
I've got a baby bump.

What I miss: I've been feeling pretty great this week so I honestly can't think of anything I am really missing. I am getting to the stage where I am starting to enjoy this pregnancy! yay! (:

What I am looking forward to: Being able to buy little girls clothing!

Milestones: Finding out we are having a little girl!

One tip I could give a first time mom who is also 15 weeks along: Yes, finding out the gender early will give you peace of mind! (;
